ABSTRACT: This article describes The National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History from Chişinău.The museum houses various animal and plant species typical for natural ecosystems of forests, steppes, and wetlands. Among rare and extinct plant and animal species displayed are: lynx, eurasian otter, wildcat, griffon or black vultures, black and wood grouses, bustard, short and longeared owls, european white pelican, european pond turtle, sturgeon, or water chestnut. Also, among the most valuable exhibits displayed is the unique skeleton of gigantic dinothere (Deinotherium gigantissimus), which lived during the Pliocene Era in wetland ecosystems. Researchers of the museum discovered this skeleton in 1966. The whole skeleton is natural with only the skull made of papier- maché - original skull exhibited apart in the same room. Another valuable exhibit is the skeleton of a cave bear found in 1963 in a Pleistocene cave deposit. The cave bear is considered to be the size of the Alaska’s bears, and could have a length of more than 3 meters and weight up to 800 kg. Extinction of this specie of bear have been a gradual process completed in the last Glacial Era.
